This applies to the song selection, the talent of the musicians - above all, Ella Fitzgerald - the recording, and Christoph Stickel’s analog restoration of the original material. I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t be captivated by this tape.

Tape 1 opens with the two classics “Hey Jude” and “Sunshine of Your Love.” When the album was released in 1969, it had been just one year since the Beatles’ hit “Hey Jude” came out. “Sunshine of Your Love,” from Cream’s album Disraeli Gears, had been on the market for two years. Then came Ella Fitzgerald with Ernie Hecksher’s Big Band, who elevated these songs with her extraordinary voice. The cover versions that follow lean more toward a jazzy style, yet the high standard is maintained.

On Tape 2, the Tommy Flanagan Trio accompanies Ella Fitzgerald’s vocals. Ella Fitzgerald sets herself apart from many of her female colleagues with her ability to convey moods through emphasis and expressiveness. She was certainly one of the best singers in her genre.

The 1968 recording is in impeccable condition. The sound is crisp and has just the right amount of richness. When played on a high-quality system, it creates a live atmosphere in the listening room.
