Translation of the German review:
Maria Friedrich (cello), Sabine Gruber-Heberlein (harp), and Thomas Gruber (Styrian harmonica, hammered dulcimer) form the GRUBERICH trio. Their music is a promising mix, whose slogan “Lausch – Groove – String” aptly describes the experience that awaits the listener. “Lausch” means to listen attentively, “Groove” refers to rousing and driving rhythms in music, and “String” describes music played by string instruments. Thomas Gruber, quote from the homepage: “...the creative mind behind the trio” is responsible for the compositions and contributes sounds from Alpine musical culture with his tenor and bass dulcimer and Styrian harmonica. Maria Friedrich, quote: “...provides the necessary depth to GRUBERICH” adds classical accents. She plays her cello with a bow or plucks it, and sometimes also covers the bass range. Sabine Gruber-Heberlein, quote: “...provides the trio with heavenly sparkling sounds and crisp grooves,” uses her harp in a variety of ways. Altogether, this creates a melting pot that combines styles such as tango, polka, and milonga (“the cheerful sister of tango”) with classical elements and modern musical approaches. Any further description of this music would be an attempt, which is why I highly recommend listening to it. This album is also available on vinyl.
The trio plays extremely smoothly, guiding the listener through the pieces as if by magic and creating a chain of magical moments. At first, it was hard to believe that these instruments would go together, but I was proven wrong from the very first track. The concept works wonderfully! The recording by sound engineer Dominique Klatte, made in the Erding City Library, sounds very natural and is effortlessly dynamic and rich in detail. The air surrounding the cello, harp, hammered dulcimer, and button accordion are phenomenal. It's as if the trio is playing right in front of me. Highly recommended!
